Back To School shopping tips

Summer is coming to an end, and kids are ready to see their friends again. Wait, I meant they’re ready to get back to school and start learning. Anyways, it’s that time for parents to get their kids ready for school with new school supplies. We’ll include a list at the end for easy referencing, but we want to take a different approach to back-to-school shopping.

The first consideration is creating excitement for your child going back to school. This enthusiasm will be different for every child. The right school supplies can get your child ready for school and get them excited about using their new supplies.

A Pen?

Yes, a pen. This may seem simple, but did you have a favorite pen in school? Where bringing it out alone was a happy moment in itself? There’s nothing wrong with using a regular pen, but if you had a favorite pen in school, you know what I’m talking about. The goal as a parent is to make school as productive and enjoyable as possible. Finding what those things are for your child is our job. The little things may seem insignificant, but having the right back-to-school items can make all the difference for your child. Utilize this approach for you and your child’s benefit when choosing what back-to-school items you decide to buy.

What items can you save on?

A few items will be a sizable investment, such as bookbags, clothes, and electronics. The goal is to get something your child will love using not only this year but for years after as well. Eliminating yearly purchases of essential items to make your life a little easier in the future and save some cash. You may end up paying a little more for a quality item. But knowing your child has something they not only love but will last them is well worth the investment.

Lunchboxes

A lunchbox may seem like a simple choice but think about the long term with this item. Lunch boxes are usually around $15-$30. If you buy a new one every year, it adds up quickly. Also, knowing a lunchbox is usually carried outside of a backpack and can easily get lost. If you’ve never heard of a bento box, they are excellent for organizing lunch items and reusable too. They can usually fit inside your child’s backpack as well. If you care about plastics and BPA’s that might be in your child’s lunch containers, Planet Box has some of the coolest options out there. They tend to cost more than the average lunch box, but the investment is well worth it. Quickly cleaned, nothing trendy about them, and they are safe on all accounts if you’re concerned about what plastics in your child’s lunch

Bookbags

When it comes to bookbags, you can find a decent backpack for around $25-$50. But other options might last longer for a little more money. Name brands don’t mean everything, but I can personally vouge that my Swiss Gear bag has lasted years. It may not be the cutest or trendiest bag in the world, but it’s durable and convenient. It has plenty of pockets and areas for electronics where I’ve never been concerned about my laptop like I was with my previous bag. You will save money in the long run if your child gets a backpack they like and is sturdy enough to last. I don’t recommend getting them a bookbag with their favorite “whatever” on it. When next year rolls around, they will have another favorite band, show, or color. Your child won’t always accept recommendations. But planting the seed of why it’s a great choice is a great place to start. By the time back to school shopping starts, hopefully, you’ll be on the same page.

Headphones

If your child is anything like me, headphones can be an essential part of schooling. Especially when you have a noisy household, noise-canceling headphones are fabulous. It gives your child the ability to tune out the distractions and focus on their work. You can find headphones in all sorts of price ranges. But knowing how children can break or lose things easily, choose an option they can genuinely appreciate and want to take care of. Bose has always had quality products. The Bose Soundlink is a highly recommended option for anyone who wants superior quality and sound. If you’re looking for a more affordable option, the MonoPrice Bt-300ANC is an excellent option. For under $40, you’re getting your child wireless connection and noise cancellation at a great price.

Laptops

When looking at laptops, there seems to be an infinite number of options for back-to-school laptops. So, while not going into the abyss of possibilities with this topic. An excellent choice for almost anything your child will need to succeed in their school work will be a Lenovo Chromebook Duet. At only $249, this tablet/laptop will be fast enough and affordable enough to make everyone happy.

Shoes and clothing

Probably the most expensive section out of all of the mentions, clothing will always push the budget. As stated before, focus on things they can use again in the future. Buying primary colors that won’t clash with other items will help immensely. So, as much as little Timmy loves those red pants, that should be a hard no. Also, buy things a little big if your child is still growing. That way, you’re not shopping for clothes again halfway through the year.

With the big purchases out of the way, you can focus on essentials. Consider shopping for some items in bulk if you have a large family. You may benefit from some of these bulk purchases if you have an office job requiring you to have your own supplies. Check out Staples for great deals on simple purchases like pencils and notebooks.
