Has Your Mental Health Been Suffering Lately?

Coronavirus and Mental Health

Being trapped inside with little to nowhere to go, thanks to Ms. Coronavirus, has taken a toll on mental health globally. The Commonwealth Fund has reported 33% of adults have difficulty dealing with stress, anxiety, or sadness due to isolation. People who have lost their loved ones due to the pandemic are trying to grieve in a time they’re not able to see their friends or family and, in most cases, not even able to have a proper funeral for their loved ones. Unfortunately, the threats and existence of mental health, anxiety, and depression will last for a few years even after the pandemic has left. Mental health should be taken seriously, and you are not alone. If you are struggling with your mental health, here are some options to help manage it. Please keep in mind that everyone’s mental health situations are different, and different coping methods work differently. These are only suggestions that we have found to help us.

1) Meditate

Meditating may seem like a weird phenomenon, but it can be beneficial. Even if you are not struggling with mental health issues, meditating can help clear your mind and relax you. There are many great videos on meditation that you can find on YouTube or apps on your phone, such as Headspace or Calm. Yoga is also a great option to be a little active and release your mind for an hour or so.

2) Color

This may seem a little elementary, but coloring can be quite relaxing. When coloring, it can relax the fear center of your brain, called amygdala. It concentrates you on the coloring and helps rest your mind. Coloring has some of the same impacts on your brain that meditating does, but when you color instead of meditating, it creates a pretty picture.

3) Exercise

Exercising doesn’t have to be lifting weights and going on a rigorous run. Exercising can simply be going for a walk or just stretching. If a more intense workout is your kind of thing, that’s great too! Just something to let off steam and help keep your mind off things that are troubling you.

4) Speak with someone

Whether this someone is a therapist or a trusted friend or family member, talking with someone can help relieve you of your worries and figure out how to reverse it. People tend to think speaking with a therapist is something to be ashamed of when, in reality, many people meet with therapists to talk about random things like their day or more intense things.

Whether you are struggling with mental health or not, these actions can help relieve stress, anxiety, or depression or make you feel good, even if it’s just for an hour or two.
