With how the weather has been acting lately, it has been hard to tell whether we will get a downpour of snow or rain. While we are mostly prepared to drive with snow and ice on the roads during the winter months, it is good to brush up on how to drive when there is water on the road, too. After all, the winter is followed by plenty of rain in the spring. It is also great to know how to drive during floods as the more south you go, the more likely you are to run into water this time of year, instead of snow. So how exactly are you supposed to drive when there is plenty of water on the road?
Don’t go anywhere if you don’t have to.
Driving through water can be extremely dangerous. When water is on the street and lots of it, it can be hard to see what is under all the water. There could be extreme potholes, debris, and the road could have even washed away completely. Additionally, you could flood your exhaust. Roughly six inches of water can cause you to no longer be able to drive your car. Your car could also float, even if you have death-grip tires, and nobody wants to be trapped in a car and carried away. A good rule of thumb is to not drive across moving or standing water if you cannot walk in it.
Drive down the center of the road.
When there is water covering the road, the center is the safest place to drive. Strangely, the water is usually the shallowest in the center.
Drive behind other cars.
Everyone is nervous while on a road covered in water. Do not try to pass other cars and splash them with water. Instead, drive behind them at a safe distance. This also goes with driving down the center of the road.
Dry your breaks.
Even after getting through the water on the road, your breaks can still be wet. This could cause you to spin out and lose control of your car. Dry your brakes by tapping on the brake pedal while driving less than 5 miles per hour.
We all hope we don’t have to drive through a flooded street as it can be extremely stressful and damaging to your car. However, at some point in our lives, we’ll more than likely encounter it… at least a giant puddle!
