Midwest Focus: Firearms and Deer Season

Deer Hunting Season

In the Midwest, during the autumn season, another season begins for many. Which season is that? Deer hunting season. Within that hunting season, each state has separate dates for when gun hunting can legally occur. We’ve broken down those dates below according to state below.

Illinois

According to Illinois law, there are two weekends in which firearms (shotguns, muzzleloaders, and handguns) can be used to bring home some antlers. Those two weekends this year are November 19-21 and December 2-5. There are two later weekends in which firearms can be used for doe-only hunting. The dates of those weekends are December 30 through January 2 and January 14 through January 16.

Michigan

If you’re planning to take out your shotgun and bring home some antlers in Michigan, you have a solid two weeks. This year, those two weeks begin November 15 and end November 30. From December 13 through January 1, firearms are allowed for the hunting of does only.

Indiana

Indiana does not have a later doe-only specified hunting period during its deer season this year. There is only one solid two-week period, like Michigan, this year for all firearm deer hunting. Those two weeks are from November 13 through November 28.

Wisconsin

Wisconsin splits up deer season by firearm. There is a 9-day gun period from November 20 through November 28 this year. November 29 through December 8 is muzzleloader period. Deer season with firearms ends with one weekend for anterless hunt which is December 9 through the 12.

This information may not seem pertinent to you if you’re not a hunter. You might even be a vegan! However, if you live or are traveling through any of these states during these time frames you would be rather mistaken. Deer seasons exist to keep the deer population controlled in the Midwest. Deer are hazards in several areas when not being hunted by shotguns, muzzleloaders, and handguns. During firearm season, deer are even more likely to be crossing roads unexpectedly. Your awareness of when driving through deer crossings or hunting zones could save you from a costly claim and a totaled car. (But you could at least end up with some antlers.)

During these seasons also be aware of the hunting zones. You do not need to be walking your dog where people are actively shooting game. Most hunters will be wearing orange but keep your eyes open for camouflaged individuals too. Stay safe and be aware! Bambi isn’t the only one at risk during these dates.
