Surge Protecting Your Home The Right Way

Surge protecting your home

This article could be filled with useful information on lightning safety alone. But lightning strikes are not the only cause of electrical surges. Things like power-hungry appliances or old electrical wiring can cause power surges as well. Here is a list of ways you can protect your devices from lightning strikes and other household power surges.

Barbaric surge protection

I do not see anyone doing this, but it’s a guaranteed way to avoid power surges to your devices. Go around your house and unplug every device you are not using. Power surges can’t hurt them now, right! If you’re this dedicated to saving your devices, then more power to you. The following recommendations will be a lot less time-consuming, and my personal favorites.

Surge protecting every outlet

Power strips are not all made the same. Some models like this one will not have a surge protector at all. While other models like these will have the ability to trip and stop the flow of electricity to your device. Protecting them from power surges and potentially saving your device(s). So, make sure you’re double-checking which model you’re purchasing. If possible, purchase a UL-approved power strip like the ones here, they have been tried and tested for quality.

Surge Protecting your whole house?

Whole-home surge protectors can make protecting all your devices one effortless process. And I do not recommend DIYing this one. Get a professional to install one for a few hundred dollars depending on your area. The main benefit of a whole-home surge protector is stopping the surge at its source. This could be from a lightning strike or a power surge from your electric company. Your devices wouldn’t be affected because your surge protector is stopping the electricity before spreading to other areas of your home. This is very helpful for large appliances that you can plug into a traditional outlet.

Surge protector warranties

Most companies that make surge protectors will have a warranty backing their product. If you have a device or appliance that’s been damaged due to a faulty surge protector. Make sure you reach out to that company so you can be compensated for the product’s lack of effectiveness. You could have all your devices
