Festivus family dinner

Do you have someone in your life that has particularly done things that constantly annoy you?  Do you have certain grievances you really need to get out from this past year so you can move forward?  Well, you’re in luck because there’s a holiday for that called Festivus.  Festivus is celebrated on December 23rd to help relieve your anxieties, stresses, and annoyances with people.  While it is not an actual holiday, many people do celebrate it.  Festivus was originally founded on a Seinfeld episode in 1997 called “The Strike” and they have a specific way of celebrating that everyone should follow to truly celebrate!

1. Get a Festivus pole

The main attraction during Festivus is the aluminum pole, in all its plain beauty.  There are places to buy a true Festivus pole but making your own at home is ideal.

2. Prepare the dinner

The true Festivus dinner is meatloaf on top of a bed of lettuce.  Although this sounds terrible, it’s the true spirit of Festivus and what should be prepared.

3. State your grievances

At the start of dinner, everyone goes around and tells their grievances.  Be sure to let each person know how they’ve disappointed or annoyed you this past year.  If you ask me, this sounds like it makes for an extremely uncomfortable dinner.

4. Partake in the Feats of Strength

If you are the host of the party, good luck.  The Feats of Strength is a tradition where the host wrestles one of the guests.  Festivus is not over until the host is pinned to the ground.  Thankfully, the host gets to choose whom they wrestle, and you are only allowed to decline the invitation if you have something more important to do such as going to work or tending to your children.

5. Exclaim your non-routine events as ‘Festivus Miracles’

A Festivus miracle is something that usually does not happen often, but it a very lousy thing.  This can include, taking your dog on a walk and they didn’t poop for once or you went to the grocery store and didn’t see anyone you knew.

If you’re in the true spirit of the holidays, Festivus may be a good thing to air out your grievances.  The holidays are super cheery and bright and soon go back to normalcy.  Take the time to let your friends and family know specific ways they’ve annoyed you during Festivus so they don’t do it the following year!  Bonus points if they still do it the next year as you can be even more irate with them.
