Tips for Storing Your Wine Collection

Storing Your Wine Collection

Wine lovers will go to extreme lengths to acquire a bottle of wine. Driving or flying long distances in search of the perfect addition to their collection. Investing a great deal of time and money getting it. But once that new addition is acquired, what is the best way to preserve the quality of your wine? Here are 6 Tips for Storing a Wine Collection that you can use to preserve the quality of your investment.

1  Don’t Store Your Wine in a Regular Fridge

You may think that storing your wine bottles in your old college mini fridge is a perfect excuse not to throw it away, but it’s not. A regular refrigerator keeps everything very dry and cold which is not the ideal environment for your wine collection. Also, adding your wine into a fridge that has food can potentially bring foul food odors to your wines. If you’ve never heard of a wine fridge, they are a great addition for anyone living in an apartment or house without a cellar area wanting their wine collection safe from the elements. A wine fridge keeps the temperature around 50-60°F (10-15°C) and at the ideal humidity for longevity.

2  Choose an Adequate Area to Storing a Wine Collection

Marky Mark might like good vibrations, but your wine bottles won’t. Having your collection near a washroom or other types of appliances that vibrate will disturb the sediment within your wines and affect the natural aging process. Another factor to think about is how much light the area gets. Too much light on your wine collection can affect the overall quality of flavor and aromas of your wines. Avoid direct sunlight at all costs. Now that you’ve chosen a spot, think about how you’ll manage the humidity.

3  Storing a Wine Collection at the Right Humidity

Humidity can be very inconsistent within a house depending on the time of year. Having ways to manage the humidity in your storage area is very beneficial. Try adding a dehumidifier to the area during the summer months and a humidifier during the winter months. Some people will have both running in the area year-round to avoid any surprises. Keeping the humidifier at 60 and the dehumidifier at 68 is a great way to guarantee consistency for your wine collection. Having too much moisture can damage the labels on your wine bottles, which isn’t a pleasing presentation at a dinner party. And having it too dry will dry out the corks of your wine bottles which is never an ideal situation.

4  Store Your Wine Bottles Horizontally

Storing your wine collection horizontally is the best practice in most cases. It’s always the best practice if you have a wine collection consisting of all corked bottles. Storing horizontally will keep the corks moist, reducing the risk of your wine bottles seeping and lowering their quality over time. Another benefit of storing your wine collection horizontally is to save space. Ensuring you can add more bottles to your wine collection with little to no additional space. Choosing a wine rack shouldn’t be decided by its aesthetic qualities alone.

5  Store Your Wine on a Quality Wine Rack

There are countless different styles of wine racks to choose from, but consider the quality when choosing the right one. The last thing you want to happen to your wine collection is the rack failing and you not only have a huge mess to clean up, but your entire wine collection could be lost. You can get wooden or metal wine racks that will both serve their purpose. Metal wine racks are ideal for small spaces and take up less room. Ideal for anyone living in a smaller living space. Wooden wine racks are great for larger spaces with a more traditional style. Ideal for anyone who owns a large wine collection and wants to store their wine bottles for an extended period. The last thing to consider will be the temperature that you’ll be storing your collection in.

6  Storing a Wine Collection in the Right Temperature

Storing your wine at the right temperature is usually a well-known fact for wine lovers. But are you keeping it at the right temperature for your specific wine? Some wine lovers may not know that every wine will have its own ideal temperature. The best way to know the right temperature for the wine you purchase is by checking with the manufacturer. But for general purpose wine storage, keep your storage area around 55°F (13°C). Making sure your wine storage area never goes below 25°F (-4°C) which can pose a major risk to your wine collection freezing. Conversely, you don’t want the temperature to go above 68°F (20°C) which can accelerate the aging of your wine collection. Keeping your wine collection at its best is all about consistency. Having the proper temperature but also keeping it at that temperature is always the best approach. You’ll avoid the corks on your wines expanding and contracting. This limits the amount of air that can potentially get into the bottles and reduces the possibility of your wine seeping out of your bottles.
