Whether we want to admit it or not, our dogs need exercise every day. Whether it is letting them run around in the backyard for a few hours, or taking them on a long walk outside, it has to be done. Just like humans, dogs need to move their muscles. A benefit for you is you also get some exercise and walking your dog helps to strengthen your relationship with your beloved four-legged best friend. However, there are some cautions that should be taken when walking your dog, especially at night.
1. Wear reflectors or lights to be seen.
If you are walking your dog at night, especially on a busy street, cars may not be able to see you or might not even be looking out for pedestrians. When walking at night, you should wear reflective materials such as a vest or shoes. In addition, they make reflective gear for your pets as well that include vests, leashes, or collars. If you don’t have any reflective clothing, carry a flashlight to be easily visible.
2. Walk on the sidewalk.
If there is a sidewalk or bike path available, take it. If you must walk in the street, walk on the left side of the road. This way, even if cars are not looking out for you, you can see them coming and get out of the way if need be.
3. Walk with your dog closest to the street.
Put your dog in between you and the cars. We never want something terrible to happen to you or your dog but keeping your dog closest to the street can help prevent you from injury.
4. Be on the lookout for wild animals.
Many hunting animals such as coyotes, raccoons, and foxes are on the prowl at night. It’s best to walk in neighborhoods or in a city, but should you be in a rural area and spot a wild animal, change your route so you and your animal are safe.
5. Don’t wear headphones.
It can become boring taking your animal for a walk and you may be tempted to bring headphones to listen to your favorite music or podcast. When walking your animal at night, however, leave the headphones at home. You should be aware of your surroundings at night with traffic or wild animals.
