IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: Pop Your Trunk

Photo of January 3rd I-95 Back Up

Hundreds of motorists found themselves stuck for hours on I-95 in Virginia this past Monday. The cause? A combination of a winter storm and an accident. There are multiple reports of people running out of fuel, food, and water. Obviously, this is an extreme case scenario, but it highlights the importance and necessity of keeping an emergency kit within your vehicle.

Do you have an emergency kit in your vehicle? If not, here’s some items to be sure to have on hand. If so, remember to take inventory of these items at least bi-annually.

  • Cell phone and car charger
  • First-aid kit
  • Jumper cables and/or jump pack
  • Spare Tire
  • Car Jack
  • Blanket
  • Drinking water and snacks for EVERYONE in the car including pets
  • Flashlight with fresh batteries
  • Rags, paper towels, or pre-moistened wipes
  • Basic set of tools along with duct tape
    • Screwdrivers, lug wrench
  • Traction aid such as sand, salt, or cat litter
  • Tarp, raincoat (or poncho) and gloves
  • Shovel
  • Ice scraper and/or snow brush
    • EXTRA points for the following:
      • Space Blanket
      • Portable Air Compressor
      • Road flares and/or reflective triangles
      • Fire extinguisher
      • Bungee cords and/or rope

Prevention is the best method to avoid worst-case scenarios. Take note of extreme weather warnings before hitting the road and reschedule travel when able. However, if you need to travel, preparation is your best bet. Your dad wasn’t lying when he said that you should always have jumper cables, and your mom wasn’t just bringing snacks to hear a few less, “Are we there yet?”s.

One last tip? Speak to your agent about your policy’s roadside assistance conditions, and it never hurts to throw on an additional AAA membership for roadside assistance.
