As a student, you rarely think about the work and preparation your teachers put into their careers. The long hours and weekends of grading, lesson planning, and making their classroom an enjoyable place for their students. Mr. DeLong was not only my history teacher but also one of my wrestling coaches. This combination role meant he had to deal with my teenage nonsense from 8am until 7pm every, single day during the week, and gain all over again on Saturday.
At the time, I didn’t realize the impact he had on my growth as a student and person. But as I’ve gotten older and had children of my own, it’s easy to look back and see how much he really cared about everyone he taught. He would often be standing outside his room between classes joking and chatting with students who walked by. He was always putting a smile on everyone’s face. In class and practice, he knew when to be stern and when to take it easy on us.
I want to say a massive thank you to Mr. DeLong for everything you have done for myself as well as everyone you have taught throughout the years. Your dedication, kindness, and support did not go unnoticed, and just know you made those early mornings and tiring practices so much more enjoyable.
