A New RVer’s Checklist

New RVer's Checklist

Do you remember the first time you drove a large vehicle? For me, it was my brother in laws truck. I had been driving a small cavalier for years, and the difference between the two was daunting. The turns weren’t the same, the acceleration wasn’t as responsive, and sitting up so high felt very different from what I was used to. Now take that feeling and multiply it by 100. That’s how I felt the first time I drove an RV. I had to take turns even wider, the acceleration is entirely different, and you’re even higher up than most trucks on the road. That didn’t stop me from wanting to get on the road as soon as possible, however. There is nothing more exciting than planning your first trip in your newly purchased RV. But before you hit the road, there are a few things you will want to do beforehand. Here is a checklist of things to consider as a new RVer.

Getting comfortable behind the wheel

Driving my cavalier felt like second nature, but learning to drive an RV is entirely different, especially if you’ve never done it before. New RVers have to think differently compared to driving their everyday vehicle. An RV can be nearly the size of a semi-truck but without a trailer involved to help with turning. Blind spots are everywhere, and it’s good practice to get used to them. Try driving your new RV around an empty parking lot to start. Get used to backing into small spaces. That way, the next time you go glamping, you will feel more confident about where you can fit and how to maneuver without any problems.

Maintaining your new RV

Maintaining your car can be something you do at home, like in the case of my cavalier. Or you can take it to the dealership for regular maintenance. Your new RV is no different from the care you give your daily vehicle but with more bells and whistles to check on regularly. Your RV might have hydraulics for the pop-out side, awnings (motorized or not), leveling apparatuses, and more. Make sure after you’ve taken your new RV on its next adventure that you give it a proper check-up when returning home.

Plan your stops

While driving your New RV, think about where your next stop will be. Some gas stations and restaurants may not have space for a vehicle of your size. Try to plan out your destinations in advance so you know everything will go smoothly when parking, and you’ll be able to fill up your vehicle without any hiccups.

Do you have insurance?

You know you have insurance on your car, but do you have the right insurance on your new RV? Having the right liability insurance will ease your stress as a new RVer if you’re not 100% confident in your driving yet. You’ll know you’re covered if you accidentally back into a poll or hit a sign you didn’t see trying to pull through a parking lot. If you don’t know what coverage you need, call us or message us here at Vero Insurance. We have knowledgeable account managers happy to assist you with any questions you may have as a new RVer.
